Expensive Jersies

Helly Hansen Charger Half-Zip Baselayer | £35

A good base layer is essential for cold weather riding; everyone should own at least one. The base layers from Norwegian outdoor clothing masters Helly Hansen have been some of our favourites since the dawn of biking and this, the Charger Half-Zip base, is another great garment out of their stable.

Instead of having a crew neck, the Charger has a zipper and a high collar that comes into its own on those really nippy days when keeping the draft out is necessary. We really like this feature, which also means that, with the zip down, this base layer is great for use on its own on milder days.

The HH Dry LIFA material draws the sweat away from your skin quickly and effectively and lets it evaporate into the air, keeping you comfortable at all times - even when you're burning up and sweating madly. This is thanks, in part, to its super close-fitting cut, which is just how a good base layer should be

A modern, high neck Half-Zip design and pop-color, flat lock stitching are the highlights of the Charger ½ Zip shirt.

Gore Power II Jersey (09) | £49.99

Three rear drop pockets are the classic answer to storage while on the bike and on Gore’s Power jersey the tops have been slanted to ease access. The change in cut is barely noticeable and we had no problems with items escaping as we have with some other slanted pockets, but we really appreciate not being reminded how inflexible our shoulders are every time we want to grab a snack.

Full-length zips are the only surefire way to allow efficient ventilation when you’re working hard and, as the fabric of the Power is fairly substantial, you’ll be glad of the additional airflow. However, it breathes and wicks exceptionally well, there are sizeable seamless mesh panels situated over the underarms to increase airflow and the main body of the jersey feels protective, rather than heavy.

All the seams are overlocked for toughness and comfort, and the multiple panel cut is slim without sticking to your ribs. The neck is also welcomingly deep at the rear, providing plenty of sun protection, and drops away at the front so it doesn’t interfere with your chin.

Sleeves are pleasingly long and a half-width gripper keeps the hem neatly in place.
